Baleen was started in 2013 by couple Billy and Leah who wanted to create quality jewelry that is handmade in the United States and that is also affordable and fashion-forward. All Baleen products are handmade in Seattle, WA. Baleen implements many manufacturing practices to ensure they are as eco-friendly as possible. They are a Zero-waste manufacturer, meaning any scrap from their manufacturing goes to recycling facilities. The majority (approx 95%) of Baleen’s materials such as Silver, Brass and Gold-Fill are made from recycled metals. Many of their jewelry pieces are also made from cellulose acetate - a natural plastic that comes from wood pulp. Cellulose acetate is a renewable resource, biodegradable, hypoallergenic, lightweight, strong, and eco-friendly. They also work with a Nickel-Free, Conflict-Free, gold-plating facility in the United States that practices Zero-waste as well. All of Baleen’s packaging is printed in Seattle on recycled paper made in Michigan in a green, water-powered factory.
